The Old Game
The New Reader
What GEO Looks Like
The llms.txt Pattern
llms.txt file: a plain text file in your site's root that provides a structured summary of who you are, what your site contains, and how to navigate it.
It's not a standard yet. It's a pattern that emerged from the realization that LLMs crawling your site benefit from the same thing humans benefit from: a clear table of contents with honest descriptions.
I added one to this site. It lists every section, every project, every essay, with enough context that a model knows what it's looking at. Not because I think llms.txt is the final answer to GEO, but because the principle is sound: if a new kind of reader is visiting your content, make it easy for that reader to understand what they're looking at.
What Doesn't Change
The Opportunity
The playing field isn't level. But it's shifting in a direction that rewards depth over reach. For someone who builds depth naturally, that's not just a change. It's a correction.
