I used to think everyone's voice sounded the same. Not in the way you think. I could tell people apart. I knew my mother's voice from my father's, a teacher's shout from a friend's whisper. But the music inside speech, the way a voice rises when someone asks a question or drops when they're disappointed, the contour of a sentence: I couldn't hear it. I was monotone. People told me this. Teachers, friends, my Toastmasters evaluators. "You need more vocal variety." I understood the words. I did not understand what they were asking me to do. Vary what? Everything already sounded the same to me. Asking me to add vocal variety was like asking someone who sees in grayscale to "use more color." I'm autistic. I didn't have the diagnosis when this was happening, but the explanation arrived later: my brain processes pitch differently. The highs and lows that neurotypical people track instinctively, the prosody that carries half the meaning in any conversation, was flattened in my perception. Not absent. Flattened. Like listening to music through a wall. This explained things I'd never thought to question. I loved Eminem. I loved rap. I thought it was because rap was clever, and it is: the wordplay, the internal rhymes, the way a good verse folds meaning into rhythm. But looking back, I think I also loved it because rap lives in the dimension I could actually hear. Flow is rhythm and timing. Rhyme is pattern. Neither requires you to track pitch the way a melody does. Rap made sense to me in a way singing never did. I watched American Idol and shows like it. A contestant would finish and the judges would lose their minds. "The way she moved through that register." "That vocal range." I'd watch the same performance and think: she was loud, then she was quiet, then she was loud again. I didn't understand what "range" meant. I thought singing was just shouting with music behind it. When people praised someone for "hitting the high notes," I heard volume, not pitch. The distinction between going louder and going higher simply didn't register. In hindsight, it's a strange thing not to notice. Most children absorb this intuitively. They hear a lullaby and know the melody goes up and down. They sing "Happy Birthday" and naturally follow the contour. I could do it mechanically, by rote, but I wasn't hearing what everyone else was hearing. I was following the words, not the music. Then I learned something that changed how I think about everything. Singing is just changing frequency. Well, there is more to it than that, but at the core of it, for my understanding, it was just that. A melody is a sequence of pitches, and pitch is frequency, and frequency is a number. Middle C is 261.63 Hz. The C above it is 523.25 Hz. Exactly double. When someone "goes up" in their voice, they're increasing the rate at which their vocal cords vibrate. When they "come down," they're decreasing it. This was the first time anyone had explained voice in terms I could actually work with. Not "be more expressive." Not "try to sound enthusiastic." Just: your vocal cords vibrate at a frequency. Learn to change that frequency intentionally. Practice until the change is automatic. So I built an app to train myself.
Sing for the Moment uses your phone's microphone to detect what pitch you're producing. It shows you the target note, shows you where your voice actually is, and tells you whether you're sharp, flat, or on pitch. No teacher. No judgment. Just a number and a target. I wasn't trying to become a singer. I was trying to hear myself. The app turned an invisible thing (am I hitting the right pitch?) into a visible thing (the number on the screen says you're 40 cents flat). Once I could see it, I could train it. Once I could train it, the monotone started to crack. I didn't realize at the time that I'd keep building the same app.
Some time before Sing for the Moment, I taught English at a government school in Kathmandu for a month. The students were in grade 8 and 9. The curriculum had them memorizing poems about nature and moral lessons, the kind of poetry that sounds like it was written by a committee. I taught them "Homework! Oh, Homework!" by Jack Prelutsky. Homework! Oh, homework! I hate you! You stink! I wish I could wash you away in the sink. They loved it. They performed it. They remembered it weeks later. Not because it was pedagogically optimized, but because it met them where they actually were: kids who genuinely hated homework and had never heard an adult admit that in a poem. I didn't have language for what I was doing. I just knew the curriculum poem wasn't working, and this one was. Looking back, the principle was already there: start where the person actually is, not where the textbook assumes they should be.
I've built six apps in the past year. They look completely different. A piano teacher. A speech coach. A body language analyzer. A breathing trainer. A puzzle game. A vocal trainer. They're all the same app. Every single one follows the same structure: Measure what the person is doing right now. Pitch frequency. Filler word count. Breathing hold time. Body posture coordinates. Not opinions. Numbers. Show them where they are. Not "good job" or "needs improvement." A specific position on a specific scale. You held your breath for 18 seconds. Your speaking pace is 172 words per minute. Your shoulders are 4 degrees asymmetric. Progress them toward where they want to be. Not everyone starts at the same place. Not everyone aims for the same target. A breathing app that locks you into 4-7-8 forever is like a piano teacher who makes every student play the same song at the same tempo. What if 4 seconds isn't enough for you? What if you want to reach 8-14-16?

The common thread isn't the domain. It's the design principle. Traditional teaching says: here is the standard, meet it. Progressive training says: where are you right now? Good. Here's the next step.
There's a pragmatic answer: I build what I need. I was monotone, so I built a pitch trainer. I wanted to breathe longer, so I built a breathing progression system. I placed second in a speech contest and wanted to get sharper, so I built a speech analyzer. Every app started as a tool for myself. But there's a deeper answer, and it took me a while to see it. I'm neurodivergent. The standard way of teaching most things has never worked for me. "Just listen to how other people talk and copy them" doesn't work when you can't hear the differences. "Be more expressive" doesn't work when you don't know what expression sounds like from the inside. "Practice more" doesn't work when you don't know what you're practicing toward. What works is: measure the thing, show me the number, and let me close the gap at my own pace. Not with encouragement. Not with a grade. Not with a teacher standing over my shoulder telling me whether today was good or bad. Just the measurement and the target. This isn't how most people learn. Most people learn fine from observation and imitation. They hear a speaker they admire and unconsciously absorb the rhythm. They watch a dancer and their body starts to mirror the movement. The implicit channel works for them. It doesn't work for me. I need the explicit channel. Show me the frequency. Show me the angle. Show me the count. Once I can see the number, I can move it. I suspect I'm not the only one.
Every app I build is the same argument: skills are measurable, progress is gradual, and the best teacher is one that meets you where you are and doesn't care how long you take. I didn't start with this philosophy. I started with a problem: I couldn't hear my own voice. The philosophy emerged from building the solution, and then building it again for a different skill, and again, and again, until the pattern became impossible to ignore. I'm not building a company. I'm not building a platform. I'm building patient machines. Tools that sit there, show you the truth without editorializing, and let you get better at the speed that works for you. If you're neurotypical and the standard methods work, you probably don't need any of this. But if you've ever been told to "just be more expressive" or "just relax" or "just feel the music" and had no idea what that actually meant in terms of concrete actions you could take: that's who I'm building for. It's all frequency. Once you can see it, you can change it.
